The Department of Mechanical Engineering was founded in 1922 as the cornerstone of the new School of Engineering. The chairman of the department was School of Engineering dean Arthur Greene, Jr. Greene, who was the department's sole professor until 1926. During World War II the department was instrumental in the training of engineers for military service. In 1963 the department was merged with the Department of Aeronautical Engineering to form the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Sciences....
